I just got back from attending my uncle Dave's funeral. It was a nice service, but the best part was my uncle Greg's eulogy/remembrance. Very moving and touching, he captured so much of what is great about Dave.
It was also nice to see so much family, but not under those circumstances.
I also got to spend time with my Dad and his wife Paula after not being able to see him that last few times he was down this way.
I'm pretty wiped from the 7 1/2 hour drive, so I'll wrap this up.

Bad news and good news
The bad news first:
One of my uncles is very sick, and he's going to die soon. I haven't seen him in years, and now I won't be able to catch up with him. That's one thing I don't like about living so far from my family, it's not easy for me to go and visit. I'll miss you even more, Dave.

Well if it can be considered such, maybe it's just news. I have another line on another job. No details at all except it's very close to where I live, and it's going to be a start-up big shop that is part of an established company. So again I'm hopeful, but ever the realist.

So the hard rain last night wasn't enough to wash away the garbage and trash off the sidewalks. Thanks, Bickle.
My job has gotten so annoying. I'm tired of my shift relief always being late. I'm tired of imperious emails from on high that say nothing of any import, yet demand a read receipt. I'm tired of sleeping during the day and being stuck in a windowless bunker at night. I'm tired of driving 100 miles a day.
Basically I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it any more. Thanks, Beale.

Sad news
I don't know how I missed this last week:
Don Herbert, TV's Mr. Wizard died June 12th. As a kid I would always watch Mr. Wizard's World on Nickelodeon to see him lay the knowledge down on those lucky Canadian kids that got to hang out with him.
Of course, if I were one of those Canadian kids, I probably would have dragged dear old Don over to the darkside as we cackled gleefully turning everyday household items into high explosives, knock-out gas and other WMDs. I guess it's probably for the best that we never met.

A Realization

So yesterday was Friday, basically my one night of the week to relax a little and have a drink or two. I was at one of my neighborhood watering holes when I realized, I've stopped going to the young peoples' college type bars and am now going to the "older people trying to drink like they're in college" type bars. Movie Review Some One Might Care About
So I just saw Spider-Man 3, it was OK. I'm still digesting what I saw but initial impressions are that it drags a lot in the middle. The effects were decent again, the story was faithful to the source in some respects and wildly different in others. I don't want to go into too much detail and spoil the movie for any one who hasn't seen it.
I guess I just didn't feel the same excitement the I felt for the other two in the series. Some how it just didn't grab me the same way, maybe because I knew the original stories too well.
Apropos of nothing, I'd also like to say I saw trailers for some truly awful looking movies. I mean honestly does the world need another Jackie Chan/Chris Tucker buddy cop movie? That's not rhetorical, the answer is a resounding NO! But the new Bourne movie looks pretty cool.

Jean Luc Petard's post about a Mediterranean restaurant got me to thinking about Turkish coffee and how I haven't had that particular delight in a long, long time. Unfortunately, I do not think Turkish coffee is high on the list of eats that the Pennsylvania Dutch are adept at making. They'd probably find some way of slipping pickled beet eggs or scrapple or some abomination in there.

Geek time
OK, I'm going to nerd-out here for a little bit:
Heroes is the most amazing thing to happen to TV. Ever.
Now I'm an uber-geek, I read comics, I love science fiction in any form, I was a greasy haired, tape on glasses, calculator carrying, AV working, chocolate milk drinking mega-dork in high school. So Heroes would have been the end all be all of my existence back then. Now, pretty much the same, without the grease, tape and calculator; I still enjoy the occasional chocolate milk.
It amazes me that there is finally a show on the air that really captures, in most ways, that which is best in comics. The way shots are composed, the occasionally clunky dialog, the story arcs, all evoke the same reaction in me as Powers, for instance. And, to me, it's even more amazing when I read that Tim Kring, the producer, was never a big fan of comics. Sometimes it takes an outsider to find the solution.

I think I only got an hour of sleep today. Oh, I don't recall if I mentioned, I'm working 3rd shift now. 22:00 to 07:00 Sunday through Friday morning. So I've been here about an hour, it's been quiet so far [knock wood]. But, laws yes, I am tired. I really hope I get that other job, and soon. I hate living like a movie vampire, especially as I seem to be missing all of the movie vampire sexiness. Still have the pale skin though, and I think Wesley Snipes is trying to kill me.
